Fun weekend

Well, despite the fact that I have a billion finals and presentations next week, I actually had a great weekend. Gabriel and I drove down to Tallahassee to go to Brendan's graduation (he got a Master's in Social Work) and hang out with my in-laws. It was really nice to see them and have a good excuse to all get together. We also got to grill Brendan about his future plans, which are still foggy but most likely involve him working in London for 2 more months before returning to Somewhere, USA.
Then, we drove back to Athens on Saturday just in time to meet my parents and sister at my apartment, where we made dinner and played games. Prathap also came, who was a lot of fun.
I've been cramming for finals all day today (Sunday), but it was worth it since I got to see almost my whole family all at one time.
Now, Modaresi's and Beal's, we need to figure out a date to meet in Live Oak this summer to fraternize and visit with one another again!

A bunch of pooped tennis players (don't let me fool you, I studied the whole time and wasn't pooped at all).

For those of you who think a dishwasher doesn't matter...

This is specifically for Garrett, so he can witness the disaster that is my kitchen without a dishwasher (refer back to the comment where he said "how many dirty dishes can two people make?"). Just another good reason to move to our fancy pants new apartment. YAY!

I'm just getting richer and richer!!!

More good news. I got the final Study Abroad grant that I applied for, so I will now be reimbursed for my whole Mexico trip. (Ideas of what to do with the money are not welcome!)
Now I really want to go on another trip. How much are tickets to London?

Ides of March photos (By Gabriel)

That's right, by Gabriel. I'm officially ending my boycott of posting on my blog. The clever reader will notice that I stopped posting on January 16th of this year. That was when my sister-in-law made an extremely insensitive comment about nerds. The nerd code says I had to completely stop posting. Fortunately, my father in law made me an enormous cake as a peace offering on behalf of his family (see picture in previous post). So, I magnanimously agreed to return to the blogosphere.

For my first post back I thought I should publish some long belated pictures of our annual Ides of March event. For those of you unfamiliar with this, it is kind of like a family reunion mixed with episodes of The Amazing Race and American Gladiators. This year's event was notable for the inclusion of my sister-in-law's sister and her family and for Clayton's attempt to create a map of the trails in my uncle Sam's woods. Oh, and also for the first time Casey kept a tally of everyone's performace in our many sporting and game events. Hey, I know, we should start a wiki to document the results next year!

A relaxing weekend in my home town.

Well, Rock Hill, SC has never been the most exciting place, but I still love to go there because we always have fun and are with people we love.
Gabriel and I spent most of our time hanging out with my parents, eating, and playing with David. It was over too soon and I can't wait to go back.

Gabriel and my dad debating: there were several debates over the weekend, so who knows what they are saying right here.

Had to stick in a picture of my beautiful baby guarding the dates.

David and Gabriel, sparring at the karate school.

Gabriel likes to grapple really big guys: it's good for his ego!

My dear mother (I made her pose with all our Asian veggies we just had with our soup...you can't really see them, oh well).

Gabriel is such a moody guy...here he's happy...

...here he's scared.

David whipped my butt into shape at the karate school...who says medicine ball drills are old fashioned? They still make you incredibly sore in the morning.

Doing one of my drills where he dropped a 10 lb medicine ball on my chest and I had to throw it back to him a million times.

I'm rich, so very very rich!!!

Good news: I just found out I got two scholarships from vet school! One is from the ONE Diversity Committee and the other is from SAGA (Student Associate for Global Awareness). Both were for $250, so now I am officially a fivehundreddollarillionaire!!!! Don't all come begging for money at once, please.
However, it's still exciting b/c it reimburses me for about half of my Mexico trip. Now, to go on another trip with all the new money....

And the winner is (drum-roll, please)...

Mommy (Ingrid)!!!!!!!!!! You guessed one of the three correctly, so you are the official winner!!! No one else even got one right.
The correct answers are (from left to right): a rhinoceros skull, and giraffe skull, and a whale skull. (My mom got the rhino one correct). Good try everyone, except for Gabriel who only guessed mythological creatures! He gets a B for creativity.

Here's the proof...

OK, Daddy, you asked for it...real, bonafide pictures of your son-in-law. He may not contribute to the blog or write you, but he's still alive.
And, we're having lots of fun together, too, I might add. Since last week, we've been exercising a lot (him at the Hardcore gym, me at the UGA gym with Beth), watching funny shows (Seinfeld, Tenacious D), cleaning the house (Beth helped too), and going to friends' houses.
Last Sunday we went to an Easter dinner with some vet school friends and tomorrow night we're playing our new DVD Newlyweds game with four friends from vet school (two couples: Denise & Nowell and Beth & Emily). We'll let you know who wins (it'd better be me and G)!
We also have a new philanthropic venture: working with the Athens Pets site whose function is to advertise the dogs at the pound so they can be adopted and seen by more people. Last Saturday, we volunteered by going to the pound and taking pictures of dogs that needed homes and then posting them online. It's great work b/c we get to play with dogs and, hopefully, help them get adopted. It's sad, though, b/c some of them end up being put down. Here's the site if you're interested http://www.athenspets.net/adoptables.html. I just checked and several of my own little doggies have been adopted or reclaimed by their owners. Yay! Check out my hands holding the dogs named Gal, Barnaby, Scamp, and Tillie (I named Gal after Uncle Sam's sweet doggie!).
School is still a big part of my life, but I only have 5 hours of class every day instead of 8 and not as many tests, so it's been a big relief.
We're going to Rock Hill this weekend to visit my parents. I can't wait!

Posing with my Bubby after doing wrestling drills together (yes, he's getting ready for a shower and is a little grumpy about it.) Bren-he's also just wearing his Austin Powers suit at the moment (and is normally not that hairy)...ha ha ha.

We went out to eat with Gabriel's co-workers last Friday. It was a lot of fun and great Cuban food. Below is Angie and her dog, JJ.

Listening to Elwood's heart (practicing on Beth's dog)...that was a while ago for my Physical Diagnosis class. I just found out that I barely got a B in that damn class b/c I messed up on all the large animal stuff. Sux. I did great on the small animal part, though.

Beth practicing on Holly's cat, Stripes. He wasn't too happy.

Beth cleaning my house...if you knew her, you'd understand.

That's right, folks, Gabriel Glen Beal made me dinner! I think it's only the second time in our lives together, so it was very special. (He made his favorite Asian soup that I always make, which he's obsessed with).

Last week, we trapped a mama cat that lives outside of our apartment. When she got to the vet, they called me and said she wasn't pregnant (as I had suspected) but lactating...obviously with kittens somewhere. Beth and I searched everywhere, but we couldn't find them, so we just released her that night after her spay so she could go take care of them. I felt really bad, but it was unavoidable. I tried to follow her back to find her kittens, but she lost me in the bushes.

Open House

Well, one of my big events is finally over. The freshman class hosts a huge vet school Open House every year to raise money to help us with boards in 3 years and this year it was tremendous. We had about 2000 people come and I was in charge of the food! Yikes, it was rough, and I ended up working for about 12 hours and coming home covered in hamburger grease. Since you all know me, you know how significant that was (that I was up to my neck in meat for 12 hours).
But, I had fun anyway, even if I did get smacked upside the head with a hotdog a few times. Most of us worked really hard and did a great job and it was a success. Hopefully we'll actually make some money, cuz I probably invested about 12 hours into the planning/shopping part of it and 16 hours of set-up/working/cleaning-up. Whew...glad that's over!
-Shirin
PS I didn't get to see any of the other stuff, but apparently there was lots going on like Hospital Tours (you gotta come next year!), Teddy Bear surgery, doggie parades, and non-petting Petting Zoos with llamas, pigs, cows, and camels.

My co-chair, Andrew Verdin. We worked really well together.
AJ firing up the grill.

Fixing burgers (see the 2 lonely veggie burgers on the grill with the 50 real burgers next to them). Oh well...I couldn't fight it.

The camel guys loading him/her back onto the trailer. It made me wonder about that camel's life and what it did all day and whether it was happy. I guess I'll never know.

Since ya'll were so good at the last quiz...

OK, since there was some ambiguity as to who won the last "Guess What Organ I Am" contest (Mommy said lungs, Daddy said equine lungs, and Saskia said whale liver...all so close!) I am hosting another anatomy quiz!!
YAY!
So, who can get closest to which 3 species the following skulls came from?
It seems obvious to me now, after looking at the answers, but I thought it was a challenging test beforehand.
Good luck,
-Shirin
