Rest in Peace, sweet Gal

Another doggie family member has passed away. Gabriel's Uncle Sam had a beautiful white German Shepherd dog named Gal, who he rescued from abusive owners, where she was kept on a chain as a breeding dog. She was always a nervous girl, as is typical for a white Shepherd like her, but her disposition was incredibly sweet, and she loved her family members.
At the end, her rear legs stopped working, and she stopped being able to do her favorite activity: walking in the woods with Uncle Sam. She passed naturally yesterday in her yard in FL. She will be missed.

At least it's not law school...

So, I'm almost done with this semester's core classes (which I will summarize in this e-mail to fulfill my promise to my mother) and couldn't be happier to put them behind me. I'm sure some of it has to do with having a baby, but school sure has been hard this year. I had heard it was more relaxed, but I feel like I'm scrambling as much as I ever did before, maybe even more! I just received my class rank and GPA from the vet school (which covers up til last year) and it's pretty good. I hate that it's going to be pulled down after I get all my grades back in December. Luckily, I'm not in outright competition with my classmates, like people are in law school. As a testament to the people in my class' brains, I have a 3.75 and am not even in the top 20%! (I'm in the 21%...ha ha). After a semester with all Bs, though, my GPA is going straight down the tube. Oh well. They keep telling us that GPA doesn't matter in medicine...just ability in the clinics. Hopefully, I'll have some of that, since we only have 125 more days til we never have to take another class again, and everything we do starts to really matter...eek!
OK, to satisfy the requests for details on my classes, here they are (better late than never:

OK, so we'd already had two semesters of pathology last year, which is the study of disease (aka pathology). This semester we did neurological and respiratory pathologies. There sure are a ton of them! I don't know how I'm ever going to remember that many diseases so that I will know how to diagnose them!

Actually, this class was for small and large animals and was collectively referred to as Musculoskeletal Diseases. It's mostly bone fractures or other orthopedic pathologies and how to repair them. It was taught by both large and small animal ortho surgeons, and I ended up liking it better than I thought I would. I really don't like bone-repair surgeries that much. All those pins, plates, and screws kind of gross me out (which isn't that easy to do!), but as a specialty, it's quite an interesting topic.

Actually, the small animal version of this was called Small Animal Digestive Diseases. It was taught by internists, and it involved anything gastrointestinal. So, that includes stomach, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, intestines, and colon. Oh yeah, and the mouth and esophagus too...don't forget those important guys! We had a surgery section of this for the first half and a medicine section for the last half. It was a pertinent topic, for sure.

OK, we had a large animal part of the digestive class too. It's all about diarrhea and more diarrhea (JK). There's more to it than that, but in large animals there seem to be a lot more infectious diseases than small...maybe not. It's my worst grade this year so far, but I liked the latest teacher a lot. She is a large animal internist, and she talked about equine livers, equine diarrhea, and how to give horses fluid therapy (they can need more than 25 liters IV per day!). That's what I'm supposed to be studying now for my last exam.

So...ya'll already know how I feel about trying to get a bunch of purebreds pregnant while thousands of dogs get euthanized in shelters. It makes me sad and angry. Plus, most breeders are misguided people. I know one very good one, but that's about it. I loved the teacher for this class too...about the nicest guy ever, but I just didn't like the subject too much. Although, I do like the idea of doing c-sections on dogs and cats. Exciting! :)

Of course, we also had surgery this semester too. We did mostly small animal surgeries, although it was a class that was for both small and large animals. The two LA procedures we did were on an equine cadaver leg (wound repair) and a bandaging lab on live horses. I like surgery a lot, but I'm not feeling totally prepared for the world of cuttin' and sewin' anything that moves quite yet!

So, Radiology actually turned out to be a pretty good class. I'm glad I don't hate it as much anymore, b/c we've got it again next semester. There are just too many organs and diseases that can be diagnosed using radiographs, MRIs, CTs, and ultrasounds that they had to split it into two semesters. We got through bone diseases, the equine leg, the head, and the thorax. Guess we have the abdomen and pelvis left.

Whew! That was a lot of classes! No wonder I'm so worn out!

Moment of fame!

The UGA website has a familiar face on it today. I didn't know til a few of my classmates told me, but my picture is on the main UGA page for research-related stuff. I actually haven't even read the article yet, but the picture is from my summer between freshman and sophomore year at the vet school when I did some research. It's funny to see myself on a page that gets thousands of hits a day. I guess this is it...my moment of fame! :)

Fun with daddy

Three little short videos of Gabriel and Cyrus:

Yard sale-in' and other adventures

I reserve the weekends for cleaning and studying. At least, that's what I tell myself. However, I haven't done too much of either so far this weekend...well, I have been cleaning, but it seems that my house gets dirty at the same rate I can clean it, so I never really seem to make too much headway. I definitely haven't been studying! I'll start soon; don't worry (Daddy)!
This morning, Gabriel tried to let me sleep in, but since I couldn't sleep late, we all got bundled up and went to yard sales instead. It's one of Gabriel's favorite things to do, and I enjoy it as well. We got a few good things, but mostly just enjoyed looking at and talking to the eccentric people who show up (or host) the sales.
I also took Cyrus for a walk while Gabriel popped into work and then we went shopping at Earth Fare. All in all, it's been a pretty productive morning, despite NOT doing the two things I said I was going to do.
-Shirin

Last night was Cyrus' first taste of sweet potatoes. He wasn't very impressed.

Despite the few times that he's seemed really gung-ho about eating solid foods, he hasn't really gotten into it yet. I'd say we probably give him less than 2 Tbs total at each feeding (once daily), primarily due to his disinterest. Sometimes, he'll be willing to let us put it in his mouth, and he'll swallow it, but he is not very enthusiastic about it. Other times, he just plain out refuses. Since we started him earlier than we had planned to anyway, we are not pushing it. He'll be 6 months in a few weeks, and we will then try to promote the rice cereal and other stuff a little more heartily. Til then...it's all just for fun and experience anyway.

No more sleeping in for us! Someone needs to remind us we shouldn't stay up til midnight anymore! We still haven't gotten into sleeping when we should.

Wake up, Cyrus...we're going yard-salein'!

The lady on the right was entertaining Cyrus with a stuffed rooster that could sing and dance. Needless to say, we did NOT buy it (thanks to yours truly's foresight as to how annoying that would become very quickly).

I did get something I'm mildly excited about: a biscuit pan! I'm not sure that's what it's really called, but it's what Gabriel's mom and grandmom make their homemade biscuits in. The lady said it was new so I'd have to "season" it. While I assumed that meant that she wanted me to pour some paprika and garlic on it, she explained that it actually means to prepare it by smearing oil all over it and cooking it for a while. Weird...

Finals continue

I have another final tomorrow, this one in Small Animal Theriogenology. You can read about it by clicking on that link, but essentially it's the study of reproduction. Since I don't want to get any animals pregnant and just want to spay/neuter them all, it's not my favorite subject. But, it's important to know how to manage a pregnant cat or dog, b/c it's gonna happen, and I'm gonna have to keep the mommies and babies healthy. But, I just want to get through this final tomorrow and take a break from studying.
Next week, I have Radiology, Surgery, and Large Animal Digestive finals and then I will officially be done with my classes. Oh yeah, I have a surgery quiz on this Friday as well. But, then I really will be done next week and can go on Fall Break with my sister home to visit. YAY!

Closer to crawling...

Making the best of it

I'm still smack in the middle of my final exams, but I have been trying to enjoy my life as much as possible. Gabriel is working on editing another video for the vet school (long story...essentially he's making some money on the side by making mini-documentaries about cool DVM/Ph.D professors to promote the program), and I am, of course, trying to study for a ridiculous amount of tests with a ridiculous amount of information on all of them. Boy am I tired of doing that. Third year is pretty darn rough, in that respect. I have senior-itis, and I'm not even a senior. At least senior year is all hands-on stuff.
Anyway, here are just some typical pictures of us hanging out together (me and the 4 boys).
-Shirin

Friday afternoon I picked Cyrus up, and we went home to play.

After a hard week of finals, I just wanted to enjoy the fun and excitment that Elmo can bring to us all.

Yippee! It's Friday!

Friday evening, Gabriel, Cyrus, and Jojen all lounged around and chewed the fat while I was cleaning and studying.

This morning, I studied whenever it was Gabriel's turn with Cyrus and, when it was mine, I did housework (Cyrus is good about hanging around wherever I'm cleaning at the time). He even got to take a ride in the laundry basket.

We used to do this with Rainbow (best kitty ever) when we were kids, although she was a little lighter! Which reminds me, Cyrus is now wearing all his 12 month clothes already! Does that mean he's two times too big?

Gabriel and I took turns with doing our work and childcare all day. This is the sort of scenario where it would be really nice to have family nearby that we could have babysit for the day...oh well, it worked out well enough, with him finally tuckering out and letting us both get our work done. I think all the distractions help me explain my less than stellar grades this semester, though.

I really liked studying this way. Having a little soft hand on my knee just makes me happy.

Cyrus wasn't the only snuggled-up sleeping bubsy in the house. The boys were at the foot of the bed while I studied. How cozy!

A cute picture from yesterday

Just finished my last final of the week. Will post more later. Here's a picture of my cute hubby and baby. They really are quite entertaining together and break up the monotony of my studying life.

Sweet doggie needs a home

I didn't post pictures from our last week's surgery b/c it looked the same as all the others, but we had a very sweet, cute, young doggie named Fiona that now is spayed and needs a home. She lives at a pretty rough shelter, so I'm really deperate to get her out of there.
She is already leash-trained and crate-trained, so I think she'd be a really good pet. She's also pretty submissive with humans (rolls over when you approach her, etc), so I think she wouldn't give her owners any problems.
If you know anyone who wants a good dog, please let them know about her.
-Shirin

She always holds her ears back when we look at her b/c it's a submissive signal. She actually has really cute bat-ears (see bottom pic).

She rolled over a lot to show that we were the bosses too.

BAT EARS!!! :)

More weekend pics

These pics are also stolen from my mom. I haven't had time to upload my own, although there aren't many of those. Blog stuff just has to be pushed to the backburner when I've got 3 weeks of impending finals. Actually, I already took my first one (Musculoskeletal Diseases is over...whoo hoo!). Later this week, I'll take the Small Animal Digestive Diseases final.
But, this weekend was Cyrus' first experience with carrots and here are some pictures.

A whirlwind weekend

We went to Rock Hill this weekend for a visit with my parents, but it was a really quick trip. I guess it's because I have finals for the next 3 weeks and never felt like I could just relax. Below are a couple videos my mom took (if you read her blog too, these will be repeats--sorry to steal material, Mommy, but I know some of my readers are Cyrus-fans too). I'll post the few pics I took later on, but I have a big test tomorrow, so I must go now.
Three more weeks til electives...

Make me babies dot com

So, there's a baby making website that Lisa told me about where you can see what your baby would look like after putting in pictures of you and your partner. This is Cyrus II below. Don't ask why he's got red hair...doesn't make any sense to me.

What do you think about my little new baby Cyrus II?
MakeMeBabies.com - What will your baby look like?

Apparently, the girl baby looks just like the boy baby, but with blond hair. Hm...guess the results are sort of a crap shoot. I'm gonna load in different pictures to see what will happen with that.

Cyrus, the guinea pig

I signed Cyrus up to participate in a psychology graduate student's research project on infant perspectives of facial features. It was just a 10 minute procedure where Cyrus had to look at monkey faces, and they videotaped his interest in them. Being a Master's student myself once, I felt good about helping out another grad student by providing my own infant as one of her subjects.
-Shirin

Where the data collection took place. He just had to look at the screen at some monkey faces.

The video they took of the process (they have to go back through frame for frame to analyze the results later).

He was a little curious about where he was and didn't always look at the screen.

They timed him every time he looked at the screen. Each slide had to be viewed for 20 seconds, cumulatively.

But...he eventually got interested in the monkey faces for a little while and really leaned in for a good look.

Funny baby videos

For those of you not tired of watching these videos yet! :) The second video is pretty long, so it's for you diehards.

Nightime at home

Since Gabriel had to be the primary caretaker all weekend while I studied Radiology (boo!), I gave him the night off tonight to do his homework. Plus, it's nice for me to reacquaint myself with my sweet baby Cyrus now and then (where I do nothing but baby-care for a while). So often, I am talking to him while he's in his walker while I cook dinner and print out my school notes for the next day, ya know? Not as much quality time as I'd like.
We had a good time. He eats like crazy at night because he's gearing up for a whole night with no food (he usually goes about 6-7 hours of sleeping overnight and last night he went almost 10! Whoo hoo!) I also gave him a bath while I showered and then read him a few books. It was fun!
-Shirin

He's still doing pretty well with the rice cereal at night, although I haven't seen it make a big difference in his sleeping pattern (last night he drank a ton of milk, which I think made him sleep so long).

I fed him the cereal when he was pretty hungry hoping he'd eat it really well, but instead he fussed every single time I took the spoon out of his mouth and then quieted down every time I put it back into his mouth...guess he's used to a breast or bottle always being there, pouring milk into his mouth constantly! :)

Story-time after a bath and pajamas. He seems more interested in Gabriel and the camera.

He wasn't always still for the story either...he really likes to grab and turn the pages.

I would still call it a successful book-reading and a very successful mommy-baby night together.

Last week's surgery

I'm behind on my posts, so you get to see last week's surgery pictures. We did a cat spay on a cat from a local animal shelter. Conversely to how I normally feel about surgery, I was really nervous while doing this one. I think it's because the cat uterus and ovary are just so fragile and I didn't know how high up I could tug them out of my incision before I tore them, along with the vasculature...eek! Luckily, our surgery teachers came by and helped me figure it all out and Tammy and I spayed her uneventfully.
Because she was so beautiful and sweet, I didn't want to let her go back to the shelter. Luckily, before I actually tried to talk Gabriel into letting us foster another cat, Tammy stepped in and decided to adopt Priscilla herself. (She's now named Sadie). She got sick after the surgery (probably due to some underlying respiratory disease) but is greatly improved at home with Tammy's TLC. What a happy ending!
-Shirin

Meet Priscilla/Sadie. This is her initial physical exam. She was anemic and had other issues but was mostly healthy.

Beth holding the kitty and writing on her record. We do a bunch of assessments before surgery to ensure she is healthy enough to endure the anesthesia and surgery.

The anesthetist (Beth) and assistant surgeon (Tammy) posing before the big moment.

Me on the right, frozen with indecision. I had to call over my teacher to help me through the fascia-cutting process. It's not something I've done before, I don't think. Since I'm only the main surgeon 1/3 of the time, I have seen it a few times but rarely have gotten to actually do it. I think I feel better about it now, though. (I'm holding the scalpel the wrong way...everything just went out of my brain at that moment...not something that happens to me very much and not very fun).

OK, I've regrouped and am feeling more confident now. There's the kitty's ovary and uterine horn; do you see it? It's tiny.

I do love suturing stuff...it's fun.

Yay! She survived and is waking up from surgery (of course, I took this time to trim her nails b/c I'm obsessed with trimming animals' nails).

Some TLC helps her recovery go smoothly.

So, I lied again

The downside to having a blog is that your earlier assertions are all on record. If you say something contradictory later, everyone knows about it. So, I find myself changing my mind about things sometimes, and they end up being a public demonstration of my lack of steadfastness. Luckily, I'm OK with that...or at least accept that it's just part of the blogging life!
Anyway, I had said a few weeks ago that I wasn't going to let Cyrus try any solid foods until 6 months old, even though some organizations site that it's safe to start at 4 months. Cyrus is almost 5 months old right now, to give you some context. At his 4 months doctor's visit, his pediatrician told me to feed him when he seemed ready (grabbing at food, sitting up, watching us eat, etc), so the other day when I just couldn't ignore how interested he seemed in food anymore, I decided to try to some rice cereal.
I did some research beforehand and did confirm that it is more likely for kids started earlier on solids to have diabetes and obesity problems later in life, so I'm really going to try to be moderate and just give him tiny amounts, but when I gave him a try, he really seemed to like it. He knew how to swallow (didn't push the food out with his tongue as babies do when they aren't ready to eat) and seemed really happy to be getting this new food. I've only given him a Tbs or two every other night a few times (mixed with breastmilk), but every time he's gotten better and better at it. See below to watch him enjoying his 3rd or 4th try at eating some rice cereal.

International Trivia

This is something we've done every year in the fall since I started vet school. It's put on by our diversity group at the vet school (so I ran it last year) and it's a load of fun. Freshman year we almost won, but lost all our points on the last question. This year, we were more conservative in betting, but if we had only bet it all, we would've won first place. Oh well...as it was, we bet less and came in second place.
All the teams consist of 4 vet students, 1 faculty-member, and any significant others that want to tag along. The vet students running it make up the questions and provide dinner and prizes. It's a lot of fun every year.
We had originally planned to get a baby-sitter for Cyrus, but we ultimately decided just to bring him along, and we were glad we did. He had a lot of fun and got to meet lots of new people (whose hair he got to pull and necklaces he got to grab).
-Shirin

One of my classmates was the MC. She's also class president, so she's probably used to being in charge (just kidding)! She did a great job.

This was a baby-friendly event, so Cailyn came too (and someone else that I didn't know also brought their baby).

My teammates Janice, Tammy, and Lisa. Janice is Taiwanese so she helped us with the Asia questions, Tammy lived in New Zealand so she helped us with that part of the world, and Lisa just reads and travels like crazy, so she was able to answer a TON of hard questions right.

This was our whole team. Our faculty member was Dr Austel, a dermatologist and Germany native. Many of the faculty members were international (Serbian, Swiss, and Chinese to name a few) but many were American too.

So, what did Cyrus do while we were slaving hard to answer hard geography and pop culture questions? This...
(PS We brought so many toys as reinforcements for him to play with and drop on the floor).

He eventually woke up and made the rounds. Here he is schmoozing with UGA CVM's Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.

These were the judges...they worked hard tallying up the points.

The second place winners (poor Gabriel was really disappointed). We actually all won $20 gift certificates to a really nice restaurant, Last Resort Grill, and plan to go on Thursday night. (That's my birthday, so it'll can double as our victory celebration and my birthday celebration).

More coherent babbling

A surprise visitor!

Well, not totally unexpected, but sort of a last minute trip. Cyrus' "Handsome Uncle Brendan" came to visit on Tuesday. It's been great to have him.
